Why Audits Are Non-Negotiable

Since 2020, smart contract vulnerabilities have resulted in more than $6 billion in stolen or permanently locked funds. Reentrancy attacks, integer overflow errors and oracle manipulation remain the three most exploited vectors. A rigorous pre-deployment audit is the single most effective control available to development teams.

Phase 1 — Automated Static Analysis

The first pass uses tooling such as Slither, MythX and Semgrep to flag known vulnerability patterns. Static analysis catches the majority of high-severity issues at low cost and can be integrated directly into CI/CD pipelines as a gating check. Outputs should be triaged by severity: critical, high, medium, and informational.

Phase 2 — Manual Expert Review

Automated tools produce false positives and miss context-dependent logic errors. Human auditors review the business logic against the specification, model adversarial scenarios, and verify that access control hierarchies cannot be bypassed. This phase typically requires 3–10 days depending on code complexity.

Phase 3 — Formal Verification

For contracts handling significant value, mathematical proofs can verify that specific invariants hold under all possible execution paths. Tools such as Certora Prover and K Framework are increasingly required by institutional DeFi protocols and regulated custodians.

Choosing an Auditor

Post-Deployment Monitoring

An audit is a point-in-time assessment. Continuous on-chain monitoring using services such as Forta Network or OpenZeppelin Defender detects anomalous transaction patterns in real time and can trigger automatic circuit breakers to pause contracts during an active exploit.
